Constructed during the post-World War II building boom (around 1948-1950), the California Building is one of New Orleans’ earliest and most intact examples of International Style architecture. Originally built as the office home of the California Union Insurance Co., it later housed banks, insurers, and local commerce. Over time the structure was converted into apartments, then upscale residences, preserving many of its core architectural elements while adapting to modern uses. Because of its age, style, and role in the mid-20th-century evolution of downtown, it stands as a landmark of both architectural and civic history in New Orleans.
